Staying Cool This Summer

Of course we're not talking about the latest fashion from the Paris catwalk, we are talking about top tips for staying cool in the warm summer months.

Coping with hot weather during pregnancy

How to keep your baby cool when it's hot

Dressing baby for bedtime

While feeling tooooo warm and trawling the internet for tips to keep ourselves cool, we really started to feel for Mamma's-to-be and those with really young children. To make it a little easier for you we've collated the best 'cool' tips from experts at babycentre, Emma's Diary and baby sound asleep . While it's warm you'll find us in the studio with the big fan (usually reserved for floaty maternity photos) and drinking the cold drinks we've bought in for our lovely customers - you know you are welcome to join us 😄📷.

Coping with hot weather during pregnancy

How to keep cool when you're out and about

Tips from babycentre.co.uk

  • If possible, try to plan your outdoor activities for the cooler part of the day. Save anything strenuous for the morning or evening when the sun is lower and temperatures are cooler.
  • Carry a fine water spray. It's a great way to cool down, giving you a little burst of refreshment when you need it. Small plastic bottles with spray nozzles are available from most chemists. At home, store the bottle in the fridge for extra refreshment. You can even add a drop of moisturiser to help keep your skin hydrated.
  • Buy a fan. Either a folding paper fan or a hand-held battery-operated one will work well. They're particularly handy if you're stuck on a crowded bus or train, or in a traffic jam on a hot day.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight wherever possible. If you're on a beach, find a shady spot under an umbrella or parasol. This is especially important when the sun's at its highest, which is between 11am and 3pm for UK summers.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. You can dehydrate easily when you're pregnant, which can make you feel faint, tired and dizzy. To help avoid this, carry a bottle of water and take regular sips throughout the day.
  • Find time to go for a swim at your local pool or take a dip in the sea to help refresh you on a hot day. Swimming is also an excellent form of exercise in pregnancy and may help reduce any swelling in your lower legs and ankles.
  • Minimise your salt intake. This will help to combat water retention and make you feel more comfortable.
  • For an instant cool down, put your wrists under a running cold tap or pour a little water from your bottle on to your face or the back of your neck. It really does work and it feels lovely!

What you can do to stay cool indoors

  • Fans and air conditioning are fast, effective ways to cool down. Just remember that when you're pregnant, it can take longer than normal for your body to adjust to any temperature changes. Try to reduce the heat gradually if possible, and give yourself time to adapt when moving from one environment to another.
  • Consider a lukewarm shower or bath to give you some immediate relief from the heat. Don't have the water too cold though. A cold shower may sound appealing, but can actually make you hotter as your body generates heat to make up for the sudden chill.
  • Close the blinds or shutters to give yourself some shade and cool the temperature.
  • Wrap a cool, wet bandana or scarf loosely around your neck. It will help cool the major arteries in your neck and make you feel more comfortable.
  • Pace yourself. Ask for help if you're too tired to cook, clean, or run errands. Put your feet up whenever you can. Growing a baby is hard work and you need plenty of rest during the day. If it doesn't absolutely need to be done now, or if someone else could handle it, don't do it!

How to keep your baby cool when it's hot

Tips from Emma's diary

How to keep cool during the day

  • Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat; opt for loose natural fibres like cotton or muslin
  • Give babies as much nappy-free time as possible
  • Stay in the shade and encourage your child to spend some quiet time to prevent him sweating too much
  • Playing in a paddling pool will keep kiddies cool. Keep it in the shade and supervise their play
  • Use a mini fan if you are out and about
  • Use cold, wet flannels, or give them a tepid bath or shower to cool their skin. Let them air dry rather than using towels
  • Make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids

How to keep cool at night

  • Remove unnecessary bedding. Opt for a cool muslin sleeping bag
  • If he is still hot let him sleep in a vest and nappy, or even just a nappy
  • Open windows in several rooms to create a through breeze
  • Give them a tepid bath, or sponge bath, before bed and let them air dry while lying on a towel so the evaporation of the water will cool their skin down
  • Keep bedrooms cool throughout the day by closing blinds or curtains. Turn a room fan on before bedtime. A fan can be left on all night – but well out of reach and never pointed directly at the cot or bed
  • Hanging wet towels over chairs or windows cools the air
  • Remove waterproof under sheets or cover with several layers of cotton sheets to absorb perspiration

Top Tips From The Happy Kids Coach https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/4/top-tips-from-the-happy-kids-coach

A big hello and thank you to our guest blogger, Ali Archbold - The Happy Kids Coach.

Hi, I'm Ali and I'm a happiness & well-being coach for children and families based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

My mission is to make family life easier by improving your understanding of both yours and your child’s behaviour to encourage communication and connection. This, I believe, is the key to happy kids and happy families.

TOP TIP FOR MANAGING ANGER

This last week has been a stressful one, we've moved house and it's been a big change for us all! Change can be difficult, especially for children so it's no surprise emotions have been running pretty high in our house this week for everyone - especially for Little E.

This morning was particularly difficult.

Little E was getting very frustrated and angry at everything which was making me really frustrated and angry too! Words weren't working, giving choices wasn't working, trying to do the 'right thing' wasn't working and I was running out of options and very quickly running out of patience!

Things were just going from bad to worse and Little E was on the edge of a major meltdown and I could feel myself getting wound up too! Then I remembered something from a book I'm reading called 'How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen' by Julie King and Joanna Faber, and I'm so pleased to say it worked brilliantly.

Here's what happened.......

Instead of reacting, I took a deep breath and responded by asking her to come over and show me how angry she was. I gave her a pen and paper and encouraged her to keep drawing how angry she was feeling. She got stuck in straight away! 👍

I continued to acknowledge her anger by saying things such as 'wow you're really angry' and 'look how angry those eyes are in that face you've drawn'.

I then took a separate piece of paper and showed her how angry I thought she was by tearing it up in front of her and then throwing it up in the air like confetti! She giggled - ahhh ☺️ (*cue sigh of relief!*)

We did this together a couple of more times to get our anger out and then stomped on the pieces on the floor! It was very satisfying!

Afterwards we both felt much better. We talked about how good it felt to get those angry feelings out and when I asked Little E to draw how she was feeling now, she drew a rainbow and said she felt happier (*cue second sigh of relief and a big smile!*) 🌈 ❤️️ it worked yay!

Sometimes getting creative can really work well to help kids express themselves, particularly when they're struggling to understand or explain their own feelings.

By sincerely acknowledging our child's feelings and allowing them to get them out and deal with them in a healthy way, we are preventing our child from stuffing those feelings down within themselves which can, and will, cause problems later on.

Acknowledging and accepting our child's feelings helps them feel understood and when we understand each other, we're more likely to get along. Agree?

No one likes to feel angry, however anger is a healthy emotion, it signals that there are other feelings at play causing the anger, usually feelings of sadness, fear or disappointment.

Next time your child is feeling angry, why not help them get creative to get their anger out? This works for all ages and many different emotions too, Little E is 4 and was able to communicate it really well

Keep an eye on The Happy Kids Coach facebook page for more tips including: .

  • "Can we start again Mummy" - an opportunity to press the reset button when tension and emotions run a little high
  • "Love is in the air" - tips to help your child feel loved
  • "Being ourselves - a really positive activity you can do with each other to say what you love and appreciate about each other and to show that it’s ok to be who you are.
  • "Top Tips for a stress free morning" - Perfect if you are tired of constantly repeating yourself and feeling like you're nagging your children to 'do this' and 'do that' to get ready for school.
  • "Bad dreams" - Make your child's bad dream less scary

Recommended by Ali, why not get more great advice from Joanna and Julie in their book.

Having A Smashing Time In Our Studio https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/4/having-a-smashing-time-in-our-studio

HAVING A SMASHING TIME!!

We first met Blake when he came to see us for his newborn portrait session at just 10 days old.

(ssssshhhh sleepy baby)

We can't believe this was a year ago, and we are delighted that he came to visit us again for his First Birthday Cake Smash!!

It all started with a very sweet portrait shoot with his sister and a few photos with the First Birthday scene set up just for him.

And then it all got a bit messy!..... Who doesn't love a HUGE piece of chocolate cake for their birthday - we definitely do!!! As the sugar kicked in the smiles got bigger!!

('chocolate cake all for me!!')

And soon it was time for big sister Libby to drop in and lend a hand eating the huge birthday cake.

(mmmmm we all love chocolate cake)

As you can see it gets very very messy in our cosy Morley studio, and we were delighted when Blake offered to help with the cleaning!!

('I'll just clean this bit up')

Thank you for coming to see us again Blake (and thank you for cleaning up!). Happy 1st Birthday!!

Kate & Pete

Bunnies, Chicks and Junglecatz

Well it's been a very exciting time here at Campbell's photography. We popped round to Junglecatz indoor play centre in Morley for a coffee and a chat, and they very kindly asked us if we'd like to run a photo session at their Free Easter Event!  With the promise of a visit from the real Easter Bunny and the hope of some Easter chocolate how could we refuse!!

Photo copyright Junglecatz.co.uk

Junglecatz is a fantastic place for children to play and a relaxing space for parents, grandparents and carers. You can even grab lunch and a coffee while you are there.....and cake, you must try the cake! We will have to insist on having a go on their amazing play frame and ball pool before giving it our full approval (ha ha), but the smiles on all the kids faces I think is proof enough.

Baby Smiles https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2018/1/bounding-baby-smiles

Beautiful Margaux, only four months old, was full of smiles when she joined us in the studio. With our new Baby Smiles package we were able to capture that beautiful smile, those squishy rolls and even caught her as she tried to push up.

Babies change so quickly and it was a real please to capture her little personality and this milestone for her lovely mummy.

Here are just some of our favourites. But, to be honest, with a smile like that how could we ever chose a favourite.

See more about our Baby Smiles sessions and book yours in our cosy studio.

The 5 S's - Soothing techniques to calm baby https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/8/the-5-ss---soothing-techniques-to-calm-baby

There is nothing sweeter than a sleeping baby. Getting baby to sleep, however, can be something of a struggle.

During our newborn sessions we use the 5 S's to soothe newborns as they can't do it themselves. These techniques can help at home too.

Your baby has just spent 9 months cosy and warm in Mummy's tummy. These techniques are designed to mimic some of the motions and sounds that are familiar and therefore, comforting to a newborn baby.

I don't do these in any particular order and sometimes use more than one at once (ie swaddling & side). Some babies just need a feed and they fall sound asleep, with others I'll try some if not all of these techniques. Our sessions are baby lead and above all it required patience and calm.

Swaddling

Babies are used to being in a small tight space in the womb, so swaddling them to restrict movement makes them feel safe, calm and happy. I alway tell Mum and Dad that I'd like to swaddle their baby and make sure they are happy for me to do so. I usually find babies settle very quickly when swaddled with parents asking for advice on how to do it themselves :).

Shushing

Newborns are used to hearing Mums blood flow making quite a loud 'whooshing' sound in the womb. Therefore any kind of shushing or white noise will be comforting for a baby.

In the studio I use the 'Sound Sleeper' app on my ipod. This works really well for newborns and lots of our parents have used it as well.  I've also seen 'The Baby Susher' work well - white noise can be played quite loud (as loud as a shower). Our Facebook followers have used recommended Ewan The Sheep.

Swinging

Life in the womb is very jiggly so gentle movement can be comforting. Holding a newborn close to your chest and swaying backwards and forwards until they sleep or gently rocking them works wonders.

Sucking

The sucking reflex comes from deep within the nervous system and triggers a calming response from the baby. Dummies are a great tool and can satisfy the need to suck that all babies have. We encourage parents to bring there own dummies but always have some on stand by just in case. We found the Avent Soothie to be great. However some parents choose not to use dummies and of course we will always respect this.

Side/Stomach

Newborns feel more secure on their side or stomach and sometimes just need a little time on their side to settle (this technique is for soothing NOT for sleeping). I usually start my sessions with a side pose to help settle the baby.

Try these techniques on your baby, stay calm and you'll see your baby start to settle.

Kate

Why family portraits are so important https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/6/why-family-portraits-are-important As photographers, we always stress the importance of getting family portraits taken. We always sympathise with parents who don't like standing in front of the camera, we don't like it either! We could list a thousand reasons why we don't want our photo taking, this blog explains why you should trust your photographer, value and enjoy a family session.

Family portraits make it possible to freeze time and capture an entire family at one single moment. In our technology crazed and fast paced world, it is sometimes hard to look back at our lives and remember what happened, with who, and when. Having pictures of the family at different stages in life is a great way to retain those valuable memories and make them last a lifetime.

The key is to find a photographer that will connect with your family and capture their smiles naturally.

Here are our top reasons why family portraits are so important.

Time goes so fast

We say it, and hear it said, so many times 'children grow up so quickly'. Within a month of being born they will change so much, and that's why being able to photograph newborn babies and families as they grow is such a privilege.

It boosts your child's self esteem

David Krauss, a licensed psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio says, I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit. A photographer’s job is to create and make the image look like a safe holding space for kids where they are safe and protected. Kids get it on a really simple level.”

Family Fun

Family portraits are the perfect way to make fun memories with your entire family, with family snaps usually one family member is left out of the shot because they are the one taking the photo. In our ultra busy, technology driven world a fun professional family portrait is a great family bonding activity.

Memories that last for ever

Unfortunately our time here is limited. Tomorrow is not promised and photographs provide an everlasting memory for family members to cherish and use to tell stories to future generations.

With photography being such a powerful tool in the world today, you have the opportunity to capture wonderful family portraits, and relive them all throughout your future. When it comes to spending time with your family, there is certainly nothing more important than always remembering the fun times you have shared together.

Reasons to be excited about rain on your wedding day! https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/5/reasons-to-be-excited-about-rain-on-your-wedding-day

Months, even years of planning and the only thing you can be certain about – is that no matter what, you can’t change the weather. It will be what it will be.

In some cultures, rain on your wedding day is considered good luck, symbolising fertility and cleansing. So whether you are superstitious or just prefer to look on the bright side, think of it this way: Who couldn't use a little good luck on their big day?"

A good wedding photographer will always have a rainy day plan, so relax and look forward to your special day come rain or shine :)

Here are a few of the reasons why we get excited about rain on a wedding day...

#1- More intimate ceremonies

#2- Beautiful rain photos

#3 - After the storm, dramatic skies can make your photos extra special

#4 - Nothing like rain to make you want to cuddle up and take shelter

Why I Joined BANPAS (Baby & Newborn Photography Association) https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/5/why-i-joined-banpas-baby-newborn-photography-association

I’ve Joined BANPAS! And I'm delighted.

As a newborn and baby photographer, I have to take the safety of my little clients very seriously.

It might surprise you to know that the newborn photography industry is completely unregulated. Photographers like me, who take safety seriously, have to take it upon ourselves to be trained and educated on how to ensure the beautiful images we create are done safely. I take this very seriously and had my training with Vicky Woods, a respected and experience newborn photographer and trainer.

Being a newborn and baby photographer requires a unique set of skills and there is a worldwide organisation that exists to support photographers like me, who want to have access to ongoing safety training and resources that we can use to provide clients like you with a better service.

I’m delighted to have joined BANPAS (Baby &Newborn Photography Association) and you will be able to find me on their directory of photographers here. They also have a fabulous facebook page for pregnant and new parents here.

I’d be delighted to chat to you about how I can create a beautiful gallery of images for your newborn, and very happy to chat to you about how I do that safely.

Give me a call or drop me an email for a chat or to check availability.

Little Blake's Newborn Session https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/5/little-blakes-newborn-session

It was a day full of cuteness and cuddles in our portrait studio when Blake came to visit for his newborn photography session. Cuddling Blake to soothe him, then patiently and safely placing him in the poses gave Mum the chance to relax and enjoy some of the treats we have for our deserving parents (who doesn't love Pringles, chocolate and flapjack - yum!).

It was great fun for me, and I had the chance to try out some new back drops and props.

He was a little curious and woke up for a while to watch what was going on. I swaddled him in one of our lovely wraps and he loved it, and when we placed him in our cozy trench bowl he soon fell sound asleep.

I tucked both his legs in when I swaddled him, but Blake decided he preferred his leg sticking out - who am I to argue.

He was obviously trying to tell me he wanted a close up of his tiny toes!

We got some lovely feedback from Mum - it means the world to me to know Parents enjoy the experience as much as they love their cute baby photos

I recently had a newborn photoshoot with Kate for my son and in one word it was 'OUTSTANDING!' Kate was amazing with him. She was very aware of his cues and when the right time was to get the perfect pictures without disturbing him. She was very patient to his needs and working around his routine. And was VERY understanding when "little accidents" happened on her bedding and materials that he kindly left behind!! The photos I received at the end we're perfect and just what we wanted and more. They brought tears to my eyes (happy tears of course) I would have no doubt in recommending Kate to anyone and already have!! I expect I will in the future use Campbell's photography for further special occasions and moments in our lives as I know they would capture those memories perfectly. Thank you Kate for capturing our first memories of our beautiful son, these will be treasured forever xxx

Welcome to the world Blake!

Newborn Photography - Safety First https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/5/newborn-photography---training-and-baby-safety It's such a privilege to photograph those precious early days of a new life - it takes patience and I absolutely love it.

shhhh baby sleeping

As a newborn photographer safety always comes first. My training day with Vicky Woods, a respected trainer and very talented and experienced newborn photographer, was fantastic. With baby's safety at the forefront of everything we did, we looked at safety when using props and posing little ones, keeping a hygienic studio, props and environment. It's so important to make sure baby is comfortable by recognising signs, using soothing techniques, swaddling, checking circulation and body temperature (our studio is heated for baby's comfort which means it's very warm for us adults). I'd never put the baby at risk for the sake of a photo.

Modelling is exhausting

With ongoing training support through BANPAS (Baby And Newborn Photography Association) and working in association with Emma's Diary, I make sure I'm fully up to date with safety training and putting Baby and Mum first.

Pretty in Pink

Whether choosing us or another photographer it's worth doing your research to check for training, experience and that your photographer is linked to associations such as BANPAS. Having a budget may also be a consideration but check if budget photographers have done their training. Are they taking into consideration your baby's safety at such a low cost of shoot? Photographers who charge more for their photoshoots do so for reasons such as their experience, training, cost of their equipment, insurance etc. So please, take a number of factors into consideration when choosing your newborn photographer, and if you have any queries about how they may work or their environment then give them a call and make an informed decision.

Have a look at our prices and product bundles, or if you'd like to ask me any questions or book a session then get in touch by email or give me a call 07712 895720

Family Fun In The Studio This Easter https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/4/family-fun-in-the-studio-this-easter

The Easter holidays were in full swing when the Lambert Family visited our studio. As this was their first photo shoot as a family it was a new experience for them. The kids were full of smiles from the start and I knew this was going to be a great shoot.

They'd taken our advice and co-ordinated on clothes which makes a timeless photo and also helps put all the focus on the lovely faces in the photos.

Young George started the shoot by helping me to 'test the lighting', and thought the shoot was over after just one photo. We had to explain this wasn't like a school portrait and we'd be having fun and snapping away for a while :). He then couldn't wait to show his personality in his photos.

Heidi was next and showed us her best party trick - wow!

And Francesca is just beautiful in this simple portrait photo.

Even Mum & Dad had their first portrait together since their wedding day - love it!

The family photos continued with all the kids together - you can really tell how close they are.

Then more family fun - I could have photographed this family all day!!

Drop us an email if you'd like to join us in the studio.

Denton Hall Wedding - A Sunny August Wedding For Gail & Richard https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/3/denton-hall-wedding---a-sunny-august-wedding-for-gail-richard

We want to take you back to August last year when the sky was blue and it was warm and sunny, for the beautiful wedding of Gail and Richard Frost at Denton Hall, Ilkley.

This was a new venue for us and we were very excited as we drove up the hill and saw the signs for their wedding.

Joined by close family and friends they tied the knot at St Helen's Church, a beautiful 14th century church with it's stunning stained glass windows in the grounds of Denton Hall.

The sun shone and the fizz flowed as the guests celebrated Gail and Richards wedding in the stunning Yorkshire Countryside.

Everyone enjoyed a delicious wedding breakfast catered by The Box Tree, and there was lots of laughter (and a feather duster for the bride) during the speeches, before the guests danced the night away.

We consider ourselves very lucky to have been chosen to photograph their special day. Here are some of the photos from Gail and Richards beautiful wedding at Denton Hall

Having a smashing time - studio cake smash https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/2/having-a-smashing-time---studio-cake-smash

Earlier this month beautiful little Sienna came to see us for a photo shoot to celebrate her first birthday. What better way to celebrate than with a big pink cake!!

We love to photograph a cake smash and always start the shoot with a few photographs to capture the cuteness before we get messy with the cake.

We absolutely loved the outfits that her Mum and Dad brought for her. We thought they were perfect for the portrait shoot and cake smash, but we gave Sienna the chance to check her hair and outfit before we continued:)

During the shoot we discovered Sienna LOVES marshmallows. Before we had chance to bring the cake out she was tucking into them mmmm!

Then it was time for cake..

'Cake? What cake? I never touched the cake!'

What a fantastic way to celebrate being ONE.....

Join us in the studio for a cake smash. As you can see, it's always lots of fun! - Cake smash prices and bundles

Newborn Photography - Keeping It Natural https://www.campbellsphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/2/newborn-photography---keeping-it-natural

Photographing precious newborn babies in their first few days is such a privilege. We keep our newborn baby photography natural, using soft colours and fabrics which makes it all about your baby and their little nose and toes.

Our garden studio is warmed up so it's toasty for the little ones. We position them safely and make sure they are comfortable throughout the session.  We often include Mum and Dad and siblings in photos as well, though we don't rush and might even take a break so that baby can feed.

A precious moment with big sister captured.

We absolutely love these photos. Baby holding Mum & Dad's fingers shows a new family together. The editing technique used in the babies portrait makes it all about his beautiful eyes,  we have a large framed print of this in our studio.

Ideally newborn photographs are taken when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old. Of course we photograph older babies, they don't like to curl up like newborns but we still capture those beautiful moments as they start to show their personality.

An older baby, this little one just didn't want to sleep. We captured his personality and beautiful big smile as he giggled his way through the session.

Find out more about our newborn portrait packages on our website, or drop us an email if you have questions or would like to book in with us.

When do you book an appointment? - Get in touch towards the end of your pregnancy and book your newborn session a few days after your due date. Once you are home with your baby get in touch again to either confirm or move the date. When you first book your appointment we'll give you a call to go through some details, understand what you are looking for from your photos, and answer any questions you may have.

We like to keep it natural but occasionally break from the mould. We couldn't help but take this cute Christmas photo requested by Mum.

When you book your appointment with us we give you tips to guide you and help you prepare for your session. We know how hectic it is when baby arrives so it gives you one less thing to think about.

This newborn session was particularly special as we photographed Mum & Dad's wedding a few years ago.
