Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year (along with Christmas) perhaps because I’m a Halloween baby! With all the parties, events and of course Trick or Treating, I like to think that everyone is just celebrating my birthday with me. One thing is for sure, this is the time to grab a camera (or smartphone) and capture memories that you can look back on with your family for years to come. As experts in the field of Halloween and Photography, we’re sharing our fun and not-so-spooky Halloween photoshoot ideas with you.

Halloween is also the perfect excuse to go over the top with decorations. With a few trips to the US over Halloween where they REALLY know how to do Halloween, we’ve started to decorate our house for my birthday…. Erm,.. I mean Halloween, and also our photography studio, creating lots of photo opportunities inside and out.

What’s everyone going to wear?

First things first, what is everyone going to wear? Of course, there are loads of costumes at the supermarket, but have you thought about making your own? Or supporting an independent business? Now on to the bit we love….Getting creative with your photos

You’ve carefully chosen or better still, made an outfit for your kids for Halloween, and you want to take photos with something more creative that the kitchen cupboards as a backdrop. Here are our top tips for a more authentic Halloween pic.

Take your photos during the day

Nighttime is spooky, but so much more difficult from a photography point of view. Take advantage of the autumn colours and get outside for your shoot amongst the autumn leaves.

Make a scene in your garden with lots of pumpkins

Pick pumpkins of various sizes from large to mini, and sit your kids on them or in front of them.  When you’re done put them (the pumpkins, not the kids) on your front step for decoration before chopping them up for pumpkin soup (yum!), or leaving them in the garden – the bugs love them!

Give the kids something to do

Using old cardboard boxes and pencils/crayons/coloured paper/paint, they can create their own spooky background – the perfect personal backdrop for your photo and it will keep them out of mischief for a while (you're welcome).

Pumpkin patch

Going to the pumpkin patch to pick your pumpkin is soooo exciting!! Take the kids with their outfits on and take some snaps while you are there - two birds, one stone, done!

My 1^st Halloween

If it’s your little ones 1^st Halloween, why not join us in the studio for a not-so-spooky My 1st Halloween photoshoot? We do all the decorating, you just need a very cute outfit and a baby who can sit independently and older.
